Lughnasadh
Pronouced "loo-nah-sah" , also known as Lammas--- This is one of the Pagan Sabbats in the Celtic/Druid tradition. This is one of the Holy Days that my ancestors on my Grandfathers side honoured.
It's on August 1st... so a bit of time away, but the next Illuminations Newsletter will come out on the Full Moon which is on the 9th.. so here we are.
I am going to be offering a Lughnasadh workshop on August 1st similiar to the one I offered on Litha which was on the Solstice. My plan is to offer workshops on each of the Eight Sabbats in the Great Wheel (what those are and what they mean I will speak to in a moment). Eventually I would love to offer a full year training working with each of the Sabbats in more depth....I've aleady started to create the curriculum for it... but for now these one-day online offerings seem poignant and powerful.
I haven't posted about the upcoming one yet, you are the first to hear about it, here is the link to join!!

Ok... so what are the Sabbats, what is "the Great Wheel" and why does it matter?
If you were to go back, and back, and back ....at some point you will find ancestors of your own lineage that honoured the cycles of nature. That worshipped the Sun and the Moon and understood that the earth is a Goddess. This understanding... that nature is alive with Spirit... is called Animism. Something that much of the recent history has dismissed but we are now seeing a remembering happening. More and more people are waking up from the slumber of modernity that keeps us numb, disconnected, isolated, and disempowered.
If you want to learn more about Animism I suggest to listen to this podcast episode in the link below... and then listen to every other episode. The Emerald is by far my favourite podcast.
There is another wave of powerful work happening right now.... a Reclaiming. Many of us who are multi-generations in from cultural wipeout of our ancestral roots are dipping deep to find the seed of connection. Working with the Pagan Sabbats is one of the ways that I am doing that.
I am also learning from as many Indigenous healers, teachers, and elders as I possibly can. This weekend I am heading into a retreat to learn from some powerful Medicine Women, which I am really excited about. I will share more about the experience once I am on the other side.
To reclaim our roots.
To remember that to be human is to be nature. That as much as we are consciousness and awareness, we are also flesh and bone and made of the same things as the wind and the decaying trees in the forest and the hummingbird and the jaguar.
The Elements are our Ancestors.
The Plants and the Animals are our Brothers and Sisters.
When we come into this rememberance which lives deep in our blood, we come home to ourselves. There is a feeling of coming alive.
And in that... there is also grief and rage and relief and peace all wrapped up in one. For it forces us to reckon with the world as it is right now. It turns our attention to what is beyond our own narrative. It connects us to the beyond and also the here and now.
And the truth... is that the Here and Now is both beautiful AND terrible.
To pretend otherwise is to live in denial or delusion, and/or, to live in perpetual despair. And neither is empowering nor useful.
To wake up from the slumber of disconnection and numbness is to reclaim agency... which means to take responsibility for your own life and place in the world. Which means to actually face the truth of the world... which is hard. And it means to face yourself and your life... which can also be hard.
But it also means to be fully alive.
It means being able to feel the fullness of being human and all its glory, beauty, pain, and sorrow.
It means livng in Truth
Lughnasadh is a Sabbat of Harvest.
It is the first of the three Harvest Rites of the Celtic Pagan tradition.
When I practiced and studied with a High Priestess of the tradition, on this Sabbat we always focussed on themes of gratitude, offerings, abundance, community. I'll speak more of it during the workshop and offer many rituals and practices to work with these themes.

One of the themes that is coming up a great deal for me right now is around that of Being in Service.
Living a life of service is something that has always been a big part of my identity. It is one of the motivating factors in how I live my life and how I make decisions.
In this period of time right now where I have taken a massive leap of faith to come to South America to study and learn and grow... and also this period of time where I am launching my school and building a business... there has been many patterns and beliefs and stories that have come up around the dichotomy of Living a Life of Abundance and Joy in contrast to Living a Life of Service. Where those two things meet. What is the Alchemy that emerges when a person embodies both. What shadows must be addressed for that to happen. What skills, tools, ways of being must be established.
It's a work in progress for me.
I'm learning.
One thing is for sure... I love this world. I love this earth. I love humanity.
Yes... I love humanity.
Even though sometimes I don't like it very much. Especially when I see things like what's happening right now to the beaches in Uluwatu. And the cutting down of the Amazon. And the genocides and wars and horror that is happening in multiple places across the globe.
Despite all of that... I love humanity and am living in a way, as best as I can, to be in service to it's elevation and awakening.
Another work in progress for me.
Which is all we can do. Show up the best we can. With our heart as open as much as we can. Doing our best to face life. To live in truth.
I spoke a bit about Being in Service in an Instragram post I did yesterday. Click below to watch.
